Boost Protection Against Sunburn and Photoaging
You’ve heard about the importance of sun protection over and over again. From us. From your dermatologist. From your esthetician. You know that sunscreen is your first line of defense against the damaging UV rays. Maybe you’re a little bored with the topic by now. But what if there was a simple way to supercharge your sunscreen for greater protection against sunburn and photoaging? Not so boring now, right?
Facts About UV Rays
Here’s what you need to know. There are two types of UV rays:
- UVB are the shorter rays responsible for sunburns and skin cancer.
- UVA rays reach deep into the dermis and cause damage to collagen, elastin, and DNA by unleashing harmful free radicals.
Vitamin C and E shield against both.
The Vitamin C and E Sunscreen Hack
Antioxidant Vitamin C neutralizes free radicals to prevent and repair damage. Studies have shown a significant reduction in photoaging, with an increase in collagen and hydration following topical application of Vitamin C.
Your SPF-optimizing hack? Vitamin C and E applied as a primer underneath your sunscreen.
For a simple way to supercharge your sun protection, apply Vivant’s Pure C & E Serum to your face, neck, décolletage, forearms, and backs of hands before applying sunscreen. This must-have serum takes advantage of the potent synergy of vitamin C and E by combining the two antioxidant heroes in one powerhouse formula to neutralize free radicals, protect from damaging UV and environmental stressors, and promote regeneration of healthier, glowing skin. It’s ideal for increased defense during the summer and essential for antioxidant protection throughout the year.
Need to Know Vitamin C & E Facts
- Vitamin E is an antioxidant and nutrient for the skin. It protects against free radical damage, aids in cell repair, and reduces inflammation to help diminish signs of aging.
- While each is powerful on its own, when paired, Vitamin C and E exhibit a synergistic reaction that optimizes their strengths for maximum photoprotective effects.
- And when the Vitamin C and E are used along with a broad-spectrum sunscreen, they take sun protection to the next level. The antioxidant power couple has been shown to enhance protection against UV-induced epidermal thickening, and to inhibit MMP-1, the primary enzyme responsible for collagen damage and photo-aging.
- According to a study reported in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology, sunscreen alone decreased the level of the collagen-degrading enzyme (MMP-1) by 43%, whereas sunscreen plus the antioxidants diminished MMP-1 production by 60%.
Additionally, when applied to the skin prior to sun exposure, Vitamin C and E may increase the amount of time before sunburn by as much as 36%.

Re: Alice
Vitamin E Acetate or Tocopherol Acetate has a comedogenic score of 2. It is safe for acneic skin according to Dr. Fulton’s standards. Please note, not all skins react the same and one should always monitor their skin when using a new product, especially if you are acne prone. Monitor to see if the reactions are normal or not.
Is Vitamin E okay for acneic skin? I hear yes and I hear no. What’s Vivant’s take on it?
